The Messy Middle: Why Every Career Pivot Begins with an Identity Shift

If you've ever found yourself thinking, "I know I can't stay where I am… but I have no idea what comes next." you're probably not lost. You're in what I call the messy middle—that uncomfortable space between an old identity that's no longer true and a new one that hasn't fully emerged yet. It's one of the hardest places to be. It's also where transformation begins.

“The in-between isn't a detour. It is the path.”

Why career pivots feel so uncomfortable

Most people think career transitions are about changing jobs. They're not. They're about changing identity. Leaving a profession, a title, or even a successful career can feel surprisingly emotional because those labels become part of how we understand ourselves—and how other people understand us. When we let go of one identity before another has formed, we enter an uncertain space.

Researchers studying professional identity call this a period of transition. I call it the messy middle.

The hidden grief of outgrowing your old identity

One of the biggest surprises during my own transition was realizing that I wasn't just changing careers. I was grieving an identity.

For years I introduced myself as: "I'm a lawyer." Later, "I'm a lawyer who helps lawyers innovate." Those labels made my work understandable. But they also became a place to hide. Sometimes the identity that once protected us eventually starts limiting us.

“Sometimes the labels that protect us also prevent us from becoming who we're here to be.”

Why uncertainty isn't a sign you're failing

One of the biggest myths about career change is that clarity comes first. In reality, clarity usually follows movement. That's why design thinking has shaped not only my work but also my own life.

You don't have to know exactly where you'll end up. You begin by experimenting. Trying. Adjusting. Learning. Little by little, the next version of yourself begins to appear.

The freedom to design your own category

Perhaps the biggest lesson I've learned is this: You don't have to fit into someone else's category. Maybe you aren't only a lawyer, a consultant, a designer, an entrepreneur, or a researcher.

Maybe you're allowed to become something that doesn't yet have a neat label. Maybe you're allowed to design your own.

“Your professional identity is only one expression of who you are.”

Journal prompts

Take a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:

• Which identity am I holding onto because it feels safe?

• What part of me is asking to grow?

• What if this uncertainty isn't a mistake?

• If I wasn't afraid of other people's expectations, what would I create next?
